Our college was established in the year 1893.  When this institution became a first grade college in 1950, Mathematics major in UG was introduced.  PG course in mathematics was started in 1988.  Pre-doctoral course (M.Phil.) in Mathematics began in 2006.  The department of Mathematics was upgraded into a research department in the year 2011.

The earliest Mathematics teacher who could be traced is Mr. C.S. Daniel.  He served Scott Christian College till 1928.  He was followed by Mr. B. Arumai Raj and when he became the Principal of the College in 1957, Mr. A.N. Johnson took over.  After Mr. A.N. Johnson, Mr. S. Jeya Singh became the Head of the department in1960.  In 1987 Mr. S. Bright Sathiasingh took charge as the Head of the Department.  From June 2001 to May 2015 Dr. A. Golden Thambithurai was serving as the Head of the Department.  Dr. J.R.V. Edward took charge as the Head of the Department in June 2015.

Most prominent old student of this department is Dr. S.S. Pillai, who studied from 1922 – 1924.  His contribution to the solution of waring’s problem is his best piece of work.  He died at the age of 49, in an air crash in 1950 when he was on his way to attend the International Congress of Mathematicians at Harvard University.

Mr. Rao Bahadur Devasahayam was an eminent student of this department, who became the Inspector General of Police in the erstwhile Madras State.

Prof. B. Arumai Raj’s contribution to this institution cannot be surpassed by any.  As a student he was very brilliant.  As a teacher he was outstanding.  As an administrator and Principal he was Peerless.  He left his unmistakable imprint in all the 39 years he spent under its portals.  The College owes its growth in no small measure to this great student.

This department maintains good results.  The illustrious and dedicated staff of this department impart quality education to the students.  Many of our students are well placed and have brought laurels to the department.  Besides the main library, our book bank has a good number of collections to serve the UG, PG, Pre-doctoral students and the doctoral scholars.
