Scott Christian College (Autonomous) owes its existence to pioneering educational outreach carried out by the missionaries of the London Missionary Society in South Travancore. The college offers diversified undergraduate and postgraduate courses for the holistic personality development of the students since its inception in 1893. Among the various available departments, Physics department has been continuously striving for excellence in teaching, research and has established itself as one of the reputed departments in the college. Under graduation studies (B.Sc.) in Physics was established in the year 1955 and post-graduation (M.Sc.) program was introduced in 1987 followed by pre doctoral course (M.Phil.) in 1996.The department has been elevated as a research center in 2009.
The department provides basic Physics foundation to the students of B.Sc., M.Sc., and M.Phil., programs through lectures and laboratory classes. These programs train the future Physicists with the firsthand experience in pure science and skill based knowledge in their day to day life. In addition, it offers one of the most rigorous physics curricula. Currently we admit 48 students in B.Sc., 25 in M.Sc, 10 in M.Phil.,(shift I) and 10 in M.Phil.,(shift II). The department carries out research in many frontier areas including Nano materials and Nano structures, Vibrational Spectroscopy, Crystal growth, Theoretical and Computational Physics.
The post graduate deparment of Physics received a grant of Rs.3 lakhs under 9th UGC plan, Rs.3 lakhs under 10th UGC plan and Rs.8 lakhs under 11th UGC plan. We have a very well equipped Computer, Crystallography, Thin film and Nano material synthesis laboratories. The DST-FIST recognized the Department as a center for carrying out advanced level research in 2010.
The teachers are involved in research activities and have published many research papers and also presented papers in seminars/conferences. For the last five years we have published more than 30 research publications in reputed Scopus Indexed journals. To our credit, we have completed one major, two minor and two student projects.
Every year the department of Physics hold many programs not only for our students but also for the students of nearby districts. Our academic programs are:
1.Model Practical Examination for +2 Students
2 .Prof. J.M. Arthur Memorial Quiz for +2 Students
3.Prof. G.H. Marsden Memorial Quiz for Undergraduate students
4.Dr. E. James R. Daniel Endowment Quiz for post graduate students
5.Prof. J.M. Arthur Memorial Endowment Lecture Series
6.Prof. A. James Memorial Endowment Lecture Series
7.Dr. E. James R. Daniel Endowment Lecture Series
8.State Level Seminar for Post graduate and Research Scholars.
As a noble gesture of social commitment, the teaching staff and students of Physics Department have formulated “Student Aid Fund” in the department to meet the emergency needs of the poor students. Also with the help of Physics Club our department is doing community service by giving science awareness programmes to school students, regular visit to nearby hospitals for rendering financial helps and feeding orphans in shelter homes .
