Ever Since the beginning of the Malayalam Department at Scott Christian College
it has a vision to excel in every aspect of teaching. The Development offers only part-I
Language. The Department of Malayalam however offers learning programmes for
anyone who opts for the Malayalam language by Conducting Certificate Course in
Malayalam.
The Syllabus and Curriculum are on par with the best in the University. Care is
always taken to impact the best knowledge to students. Equal importance is given to
the spoken and written Malayalam. The syllabus is updated periodically taking into
account the developments elsewhere in other Indian Universities and autonomous
institutions. The Curriculam is so planned that the students are trained to take up
avocations in the field of Journalism.
The Department of Malayalam endeavours to the best prospects for everyone who
aspires to learn the Malayalam Language both written as well as spoken in line with
the best of language and Literature skills of the Malayalam Language of Central Kerala.
Scott Christian College (Autonomous) Nagercoil is a pioneering Centre for higher education, situated in Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu. Since its establishment in 1893 Scott Christian College (Autonomous) has grown from strength to strength. The District was a part of the erstwhile princely state of Travancore. In 1956 it was annexed to Tamil Nadu. But culturally and geographically it is still a part of Kerala though politically separated. Even now one third of its population speak Malayalam. Malayalam is taught as a First Language in several Schools and Colleges in this District. The culture organization like Mitram, Malayala Samajam Kanyakumari and Chaithenya Kalavedi endeavour to promote the cause of Malayalam Language and Literature.
The study of Language is a part of the curriculam today. The students of this college learn Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi and French in addition to the English language. Ever since the establishment of this college, Malayalam has been taught as partII/I language. Several scholarly Professors served this department during the period of last century. Dr. K.S.Narayanan Pillai, Prof. K.B.M.Hussin, Mr. Rakshadas, Pro. Y. George are some of the eminent teachers. Presently the department is headed by Dr. Jisha S.K. Many of our old students have come up very high in life both at the National as well as International level.
In the College Library there is a Malayalam section furnished with thousands of rare books, since the later half of the 18th century. The students are eager to make use of these books for their studies as well as to enhance their knowledge.
